Au Pair in USA
Discover the world through the Au Pair Program!
Are you Polish citizen, dreaming of an amazing experience that combines work, travel, and the chance to make new friends? The Au Pair Program is just for you!
The Au Pair Program in the USA (Au Pair in America) is the most popular form of cultural exchange programs in the world!
- The program is designed for young people from Poland up to 26 years old (mostly girls) who want to travel to the United States to live with an American host family and take care of their children. A person who chooses to become an Au Pair becomes a real member of the host family.
- The main responsibility of an Au Pair is to care for the host family’s children. The Au Pair performs childcare duties (for toddlers or school-aged children) and, in return, receives pocket money, free accommodation and meals, paid vacation, and the opportunity to attend a language course at a college, broaden their horizons, travel across the USA, and experience American lifestyle and culture from the inside.

FAQ
What is the Au Pair host family matching process like?
After being accepted into the program, you create your profile, which becomes available to families looking for an Au Pair. Families can reach out to schedule video calls and get to know you better. It’s also your chance to ask questions and make sure the family is the right fit for you.
How long can I stay with a host family as part of the Au Pair program?
The standard program lasts 12 months, but there’s an option to extend for another 6, 9, or 12 months.
What are the typical responsibilities of an Au Pair?
The main responsibility is caring for children: preparing meals, taking them to school, playing, helping with homework, and handling small child-related tasks (e.g., tidying toys or doing the children’s laundry). You are not responsible for full house cleaning or cooking for adults.
How many hours per week does an Au Pair work?
An Au Pair usually works up to 45 hours per week, no more than 10 hours a day. Duties may include making breakfast, playing, driving kids to activities, helping with baths or bedtime. You’ll always get 1.5 days off per week and one full weekend off per month. Responsibilities are strictly child-related.
Are Au Pair work hours the same in every country?
No. In the USA, there are clear rules: max 45 hours per week and 10 hours per day. Each country may have different limits, so always confirm with your coordinator.
What are the language requirements for the program?
You need to speak conversational English. You don’t need to be fluent, but you must be able to communicate with the family and children and participate in classes and trainings.
How long does the application and visa process take?
Typically, the entire process — from application to receiving your visa and tickets — takes 1 to 3 months. This can vary depending on embassy availability and how quickly you find a family.
Are there age restrictions to join the Au Pair program?
Yes, you must be between 18 and 26 years old at the time of application. This is a key visa requirement.
What travel opportunities does the program offer outside of work?
You can travel across the U.S. in your free time, and after your program ends, you get an extra month to explore the country. You also get two weeks of paid vacation during the year for shorter trips.
Will I have time to see the USA, or is it only about working with kids?
Yes! The program is not just about work — it’s also a cultural exchange. You’ll have weekends off, two weeks of paid vacation, and a 30-day grace period after your program ends to travel. It’s the perfect way to see America from the inside — not just as a tourist.
