How to prepare for the Work and Travel Program? The American Dream – A Dream Come True!

Students (and not only!) all around the world are fascinated by the American Dream. From a young age, the media have fed us images of the Western world, a world that feels familiar even though it’s so different from what we experience daily. The Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, or the colorful billboards of Times Square—many have never seen them in person, yet we would recognize them instantly. If you’re one of those who decided to stop waiting and join WAT USA to experience what this “Western flow” is all about and are now browsing the internet looking for a practical guide on how to prepare for your trip—you’re in the right place! Below, we’ve gathered some practical tips on how to get ready, what to take care of before departure, and what to bring with you so you can head to the States with peace of mind.

Work and Travel USA – How to Go?

One of the first steps in thinking about traveling to the USA with the WAT program is choosing an agency. Easy Travel Abroad (ETA) alongside companies such as The Best Way (CIEE), BTC (stany.pl), Camp America, or CCUSA not only helps with finding a suitable summer job in the USA and handling all the paperwork but also supports participants before, during, and after the program. Once you’ve selected an agency and reviewed its offer, you’ll need to register. Registration is usually straightforward and involves filling out a form available on the website. For registered participants, most agencies, including ETA, organize informational meetings. Think ahead about what you’d like to ask—it’s essential to get all your questions answered. During such a meeting, you’ll learn all the details you need to know about your trip to the USA.

If you’ve already found an agency, registered, and understand “what’s going on,” it’s time to think about what you’d like to do and which location would be best for you. Now comes the moment to choose the right job offer and have an interview with a potential employer. Think about your interests—you’re entering adult life, so do what you love. The agency’s representative will be happy to assist you in selecting the best offer based on your preferences. If you have previous references—let them know; they may come in handy!

Once your chosen offer is accepted, complete all required documents and application forms, pay the program and J-1 visa fees as agreed with your agency, and wait for information about your appointment at the U.S. consulate to obtain your visa. Depending on the company you’re working with, you may be responsible for scheduling your consulate visit. At ETA, we’ll handle this for you and inform you of the scheduled date!

How to Prepare for the Trip in 2025?

Documents are always the most critical part of any international trip. You can travel without clothes 🙂 but not without an ID or passport. The same goes for the Work & Travel program, so make sure you gather all the necessary documents. Easy Travel Abroad provides all its students with a folder containing all the “papers” so that you don’t forget anything important. Set up a currency or international bank account and health insurance for the duration of your stay. At Easy Travel Abroad, insurance is included in the program fee, and the sponsoring organization provides comprehensive insurance until the end of your employment contract. Flights are a little different, as you must purchase them independently. You can choose any flight, explore various options, and begin the adventure of a lifetime.

If you’re trying to organize in your mind what documents you’ll need, we’ve made it easy for you! Here’s a list of the most important documents to remember:

  • A passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry. If you don’t have this document yet, don’t wait. Information on how to apply for one can be found on the government website here.
  • An international driver’s license (if required).
  • A J-1 visa.
  • DS-2019 form proving your participation in the WAT program.
  • SEVIS confirmation—proof of payment.
  • Round-trip flight tickets.
  • Documents proving sufficient funds for your initial stay in the USA (if accommodation isn’t provided).

What to Pack for Your Work and Travel Trip?

As we’ve already mentioned—without the proper documents, the trip won’t happen, so make sure the first thing you pack in your suitcase is the folder with your documents: Passport, J-1 visa, DS-2019, SEVIS, and tickets are a must-have. Pack your wallet with a small supply of U.S. dollars and a payment card. While you can purchase most things locally, bring appropriate clothes for the season and climate of your destination, as well as essential toiletries. If you’re on any long-term medication, ensure you have enough for at least the start of your trip. Ensure your safety by packing a small first-aid kit. Make sure you have all your electronics: phone, laptop, chargers. Note that the USA uses different electrical outlets than in Poland, so prepare by bringing an adapter. A helpful accessory is a map or local guidebook. If you prefer not to invest in paper versions, download offline maps. Remember, you may not have network coverage or internet access immediately after arrival.

Preparing for Your Flight and Journey to the USA

Before departure, focus on the essentials. Pack your luggage carefully. Check the baggage limits on the airline’s website and pack accordingly. Make sure the folder with all your documents is packed. If possible, check in online to save time. Plan and arrange your transport to the airport, ensuring you have enough time for check-in (if not done online), baggage drop, and security screening. Note that the USA is outside the Schengen area, so an additional border check may be required at the airport.

The First Days After Arriving for Work and Travel

After arriving, make sure you stay connected with the world and, most importantly, home. Using roaming services can be expensive, so start by purchasing a local SIM card or using eSIMs available from apps like Airalo, GigSky, or T-Mobile. As soon as possible, settle into your accommodation to relax after the long and tiring journey. Don’t forget to register in the SEVIS system! Some programs require registration within the first few days after arrival. Depending on your purchased health insurance policy, you may need to activate it upon arrival. If so, make sure you understand how the process works with your insurer or check with your agency representative. In the following days, schedule time to meet your employer, and in the meantime, get to know your new surroundings. Learn how to use public transport and find the nearest stores, so you can move around efficiently. Plan your future route to work.

How Much Can You Earn?

Earnings depend on the state and type of work. Hourly wages for Work and Travel USA 2024 can range from $7.25 to $15 per hour, depending on the job. If you’re focused on earning money, you can take on extra work in your free time or opt for paid overtime. Remember, though, that this is summer work, and once you return, the new academic year awaits! Despite considering accommodation, food, and current expenses—you’ll still be able to save enough to stay a little longer after work and explore some of the United States’ secrets.
